From the Archives of the Gunn Museum... Join us at the Washington Senior Center for coffee hour readings from the archives of the Gunn Historical Museum, on the first Monday of the month: February 2nd starting at 10:00am. Staff from the Gunn Museum will be reading research papers from the museum's archives, sharing photos, stories and reminiscing about Washington's history. The February reading will be a paper called The History of Nettleton Hollow by Mrs. Charles Sherman Hollister (Lora Nettleton), written at the Hollister Homestead in 1908. The hollow road was the turnpike from Cornwall to New Haven, which joined the turnpike from New York to Albany. All the produce from the region was carried by teams to the New Haven markets and that made this a much traveled road. Many hogs were raised and butchered in this area leading to the name Pork Hollow, which Mr. Gunn disliked, so he began to call it Nettleton Hollow. This paper discusses the early history of Nettleton Hollow in Washington, chronicling the simple, industrious and frugal lives of the people who inhabited the area in the days before matches and sewing machines, where everything, from clothing to candles, was made by hand. This event is free and open to the public. The Washington Senior Center is located Bryan Hall Plaza in the center of Washington Depot. Call the museum at 860-868-7756 or view their website www.gunnlibrary.org for more information.
